How to Install a GPS Tracker: A Step-by-Step Guide

OBD-II and portable trackers can be fitted in minutes by anyone. Hardwired trackers connect to vehicle wiring and are best fitted by a qualified installer. Placement matters for both signal and security.

Working on vehicle electrics can be dangerous and may affect warranties. If in doubt, use a qualified installer.

OBD-II plug-in trackers

  • Find the OBD-II port, usually under the dashboard near the steering column
  • With the ignition off, push the tracker firmly into the port
  • Turn on the ignition and check the device status lights
  • Confirm the vehicle appears in the platform

Hardwired trackers

  • Disconnect the battery if the installer's procedure requires it
  • Connect permanent power, ground and ignition sense wires as specified
  • Secure the unit out of sight, with its top facing the sky where possible
  • Fuse the power supply and tidy the wiring
  • Test reporting before refitting trim panels

Portable and asset trackers

  • Charge or activate the device
  • Mount it where it is protected but not fully enclosed in metal
  • Use screws, bolts or adhesive mounts rather than relying on magnets alone
  • Check the first location report

Placement tips

GPS signals pass through plastic and glass but not through metal. Avoid placing devices under metal plates or deep inside the engine bay.
