Understanding Geofencing: Setup and Benefits for GPS Tracking

A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn on a map. When a tracked vehicle, asset or person crosses it, the platform records the event and can send you an alert.

Types of geofence

  • Circle: a centre point and radius, quick to create
  • Polygon: a custom shape that follows a site boundary
  • Route corridor: a band along an expected route

Applications

Fleet

Record arrivals at customer sites, depot departures and unauthorised areas.

Asset security

Get an alert when equipment leaves a yard or site, especially out of hours.

Personal safety

Get notified when a family member arrives at school, home or a care setting.

Tips

  • Make geofences slightly larger than the site to allow for GPS drift
  • Combine with time rules to reduce unnecessary alerts
  • Name geofences clearly so reports are easy to read
